Biosketch

As a paediatric gastroenterologist, Christian Braegger was head of the Division of Gastroenterology and Nutrition of the University Children’s Hospital Zurich from 1993 to 2020. Furthermore, he was a long-term member of the IBD Porto Group of ESPGHAN as well as a member of the ESPGHAN Committee on Nutrition.

Since 2005 he is the president of the Committee on Nutrition of the Swiss Society of Paediatrics (pädiatrie schweiz) and since 2021 he is head of the Nutrition Research Unit of the University Children’s Hospital Zurich.

His research interests include chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and mucosal immunology in children, the development of the intestinal microbiota in infants and children and its role in functional abdominal disorders. He is a specialist in breastfeeding and infant nutrition and interested in iodine deficiency during pregnancy and lactation, as well as in vitamin D deficiency and rickets in infants and children.

Since 2007 he is engaged in the clinical and scientific training of paediatricians in Cambodia and Armenia. Furthermore, he is an active teacher of paediatricians in many European countries, as well in the middle east, in Northern Africa and in Asia.

He is author and co-author of 192 peer-reviewed publications (PubMed, December 2023) which have been cited more than 21’000 times (Google Scholar, December 2023: h-index 68).
